Golf GTI mk2

Golf GTI mk2, the heir that grew in confidence

On sale from 1984, the second Golf GTI kept the recipe of the first in a wider, longer and better-finished body. It first used an eight-valve fuel-injected 1.8-litre, then from 1986 a sixteen-valve version that became the enthusiasts' favourite. Built until 1992, it evolved over the model years, up to the late big-bumper cars that still divide purists.

More comfortable than the mk1 without losing its character, the GTI mk2 won over a whole generation of drivers, which explains how cherished it is today. Its identity rests on a few details a fan spots instantly: the red grille stripe, the GTI or 16V badges, the original wheels and a restrained interior. Restoring a Golf II is above all about respecting those details, without overdoing it.

Our stickers for the Golf GTI mk2

The Golf II range is still small, and we prefer to say so plainly:

• "Das Original" sticker with the VW logo and a year, to sign your GTI with a knowing nod to its lineage.
• "Volkswagen Das Original" keyring, a STICK-IN creation in light, tough soft PVC.
• Special request: missing a marking for your Golf II? Submit it through our "Looking for a specific sticker" page; we study every proposal.

Preparing to fit on a Golf II

On bodywork more than thirty years old, the paint has often been polished or touched up: check that the area is sound, with no lifting clear coat, then degrease it with a mild product and let it dry. Avoid cold days and direct sun, dry-position the sticker with two pieces of masking tape, then squeegee from the centre outwards. If you are unsure about placement, look at period photos of your model year: it is the best way to stay consistent.
