205 GTI 1.6

The 205 GTI 1.6, where it all began

Unveiled in 1984, the 205 GTI arrived with a 105 bhp fuel-injected 1.6-litre, the XU5J. For the 1987 model year a revised cylinder head lifted output to 115 bhp, just as the 130 bhp 1.9 joined the range. Light, eager and easy to place, the 1.6 still has devoted fans who find it more playful than its bigger sister and love an engine that enjoys revving.

The GTI is recognised by its C-pillar lettering, the badges on the ribbed rear panel, the black textured door pillars and, under the bonnet, a set of technical labels that tell a 105 from a 115. Purists look at those details very closely at any meet.

105 or 115 bhp: check before ordering

The engine labels differ between the two versions, starting with the airflow meter label, whose setting value changes. The safest approach is to read the engine type on the block or the manufacturer's plate, then compare it with the pictures on our product pages. Apply labels to a clean, dry surface degreased without harsh solvents, in the original position: a photo of the engine taken before dismantling remains the best guide.

Faithful reproductions, made to order in France by 205 enthusiasts.
