204

The Peugeot 204, a quiet revolution

Introduced in 1965 and built until 1976, the 204 marked a turning point for Sochaux: it was the first mass-production Peugeot with front-wheel drive, using a transverse light-alloy overhead-cam engine, a modern layout for a family car of the time. Compact, comfortable and well finished, it became one of the best-selling cars in France at the end of the 1960s.

The range included a saloon, an estate, and a shorter coupé and convertible, followed by a small-displacement Diesel version. Today these cars attract collectors who care about authenticity, under the bonnet too, where the original labels have often vanished after years of cleaning and repairs.

Our decals for the Peugeot 204

For the 204, the selection focuses on two technical labels shared by many Peugeots of the same generation:

• "Attention clé à bougie" sticker, the warning fitted in the engine bay of several Peugeots, from the 104 to the 504.
• Alternator and battery label, common to a large part of the Peugeot range of the period, from the 104 to the 604.

These two labels often make the difference at a concours or club meeting, where enthusiasts are quick to lift the bonnet.

Fitting a technical label on an old engine

Before fitting, locate the original position using photos of preserved 204s or period documentation, as a misplaced label is as noticeable as a missing one. Clean the surface, often marked by oil and dust, with a degreaser followed by isopropyl alcohol, let it dry and apply on cold metal, with the engine switched off for a long time. Avoid areas directly exposed to exhaust heat.
