Renault 4L

The Renault 4: a thirty-year career

Launched in 1961, the Renault 4 was built in France until the early 1990s, with a simplicity that became legendary: front-wheel drive, rear hatch, flat floor and soft suspension able to cope with rough tracks. From the early cars with the Billancourt engine to the last GTLs with the Cléon-Fonte unit, by way of the vans and special editions, every 4L tells the story of its era. Today it is restored for classic car shows as often as it is prepared for student raids, where its toughness and easy maintenance still work wonders.

The bonnet of a 4L opens onto accessible mechanicals, where every label is visible at first glance. Enthusiasts know that a clean engine bay with legible markings makes all the difference at a show or a sale.

The 4L selection focuses on the technical labels of the engine bay, shared with several Renaults of the period:

• Oil cap: ELF Lubrifiants insert, and Elf Prestigrade Sport Supra insert for older engines.
• Lubricant recommendation: "Renault préconise ELF" sticker.
• Battery: "Important batterie" warning label.
• Manufacturer reminders: label recommending servicing with Renault parts.

Choosing the right label for the year

Markings changed over the 4L's long career: the Elf Prestigrade insert matches older models, while the ELF Lubrifiants label goes with later production. Go by your car's year and, where possible, any traces still visible on the cap. Clean the cap and panels with degreaser, let them dry and apply on a cold engine for lasting adhesion despite the heat.

These labels are made to order in France within 3 to 7 days: faithful reproductions prepared by fans of French people's cars.
