Renault 5 Alpine | Turbo

From the R5 Alpine to the Alpine Turbo

Launched in 1976, the Renault 5 Alpine relied on a 93 hp 1,397 cc engine and a five-speed gearbox to shake up the small sports cars of its day. In the United Kingdom it was sold as the Gordini, since the Alpine name already belonged to Sunbeam. In late 1981 the Alpine Turbo took over: the engine gained a turbocharger and rose to 110 hp, while the livery evolved with new stripes and the word « Turbo » on the rear window.

Stripe kits therefore differ from one period to the next: side stripes, A5 logos, tailgate lettering. That is exactly what a knowledgeable enthusiast checks first at any classic car meeting.

Choosing the right kit for your model year

Before ordering, date your car precisely using the registration document and the manufacturer's plate: a 1979 kit on a 1983 Turbo is instantly spotted by experts. Also check the original stripe colour of your car against period photos. For long side stripes, work in pairs, position them with slightly soapy water so you can adjust them, then squeegee the water out from the centre to the ends and leave to dry for a day.
